By far the biggest influence on my chosen path is my Grandfather, who was a successful entrepreneur in the 1960’s & 70’s.
A classic rags to riches story my Grandfather sold his concrete pipe manufacturing business during the late 1970’s and went on to buy and sell many different business.
I was always encouraged to think like an entrepreneur. This “anyone can do it” philosophy has shaped both my personal and business life.
This philosophy was put to the test in my personal life when in 1999 I suffered a drug induced psychosis then again in my business career when in 2008 after 30 years of trading the family business was liquidated.
Both these experience, although painful for me and my immediate family, made a lasting impression that gave me empathy and insight into the ups and downs that can unexpectedly arise in a persons life.
I wanted to use my experiences to help others. I studied the insolvency process and began to work with highly skilled and effective turnaround experts and entrepreneurs. This helped to turn a negative experience into a positive one!
For the following 5 years I went on to buy and sell businesses in all sectors. I specialised in helping businesses that were struggling to pay their bills on time or manage their cash flow effectively.
Financial distress in business and in personal life is stressful and creates fear, even illness. But I believe that the lowest point in the cycle, holds the biggest opportunity to re-evaluate, and if you wish, change your life.
I had the chance to re-evaluate my life twice, during those dark moments. I decided that I would not look back with regret or into the future with fear. I gave up drinking alcohol in 2002 along with drugs of all kinds (including paracetamol and asprin) and tried to live a healthy clean lifestyle that centred around my family. I use exercise to de-stress and my time with our three children and their gorgeous Mum to remember how lucky I am, not only to be alive but to be blessed with what I have.
Following several successful exits from business I had bought for £1 (peppercorn payment) I begin a new chapter in 2015 when I started work at The Richmond Group. With net assets of over £200m and working directly with highly successful entrepreneurs James Benamor and Sam Wells I was excited by the ambition and clear RG mission to disrupt industries and grow their tech based business portfolio.
Working with the team that grew Amigo Loans from a start up to a billion pound company I knew this would be a massive opportunity, and a different challenge to my previous roles.
I spent 2.5 years working on several different projects, in several different roles, within FinTech, EdTech and PropTech at RG. What struck me most was the focus and determined aggression to make things work, even if it meant changing the entire business model overnight! (we did this twice)
In 2018 I began looking for new investment opportunities and started working with new clients.
I will invest my time and money into companies that have the potential to change the world. The money I invest is the same as anyone else’s money but it comes with the benefit of working with me directly to grow, maximise your multiplier then exit your business.
